Give a brief description of your career.
“I started my career in surveying in 1981 for a Seismic firm based in West Texas called Geo Systems. (Mapped Landed where oil companies were searching for oil and natural gas). In 1985, I moved back to Maine and spent two years at Bath Iron Works in their survey department, where I worked with construction layout, optical tooling, and precision alignments for shipbuilding.
From 1987 to 1994, I worked at CES, Inc. a surveying, engineering, and environmental consulting firm. (Where I became a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor). From 1994 to 2000, I worked at James W. Sewall Company where I surveyed boundaries and would establish GPS ground control networks for aerial mapping.
From 2000-2005 I worked as a Layout Foreman at H.E Sargent (Sargent). From 2005 – 2010 I worked as a layout Foreman at Vaughn Thibodeau, a construction company. From 2010-2012, I worked at Maine Earth as a Layout Foreman, and from 2012 to present I’m a Layout Foreman here, at Sargent.”
What do you like about your position?
“I enjoy working with my Sargent coworkers, being outside, seeing projects taking shape and being a part of the team.”
Name a mentor & what you learned/received for wisdom.
“I don’t think there is any single mentor I can pick out. I think if you enjoy what you do, and have a understanding of what needs to be done, have the motivation to do it, to listen and participate, there’s so much knowledge within Sargent that you cannot fail.”
What does being an employee-owner means to you?
“It’s a fantastic retirement bonus. If we work hard and the company does well we will all benefit.”
Project Manager Travis Fernald says, “When I started as a Field Engineer, I worked on a landfill project in New Hampshire. Pete Williams was also doing layout and at the time was doing multiple projects. For a few months he would travel to my project in New Hampshire once a week to work with me. He taught me how to use the total station that I was assigned and showed me how to use CAD. Thank you, Pete for taking the time to help me.”
