Safety starts on day one with training, regardless of prior experience.

Every new Sargent team member goes through a safety orientation program before they head to work. Upon completion of orientation, our site supervisors train everyone in the field on the specific tasks they will perform in a real-world setting.

Training isn't a one-time conversation at Sargent. We offer training for any new tasks our employee-owners encounter to ensure they know all the hazards and best practices surrounding every job.

Inspections

Sargent superintendents, foremen, equipment operators, and safety committee members perform daily safety inspections while our safety team performs comprehensive weekly inspections.

Our teams address potential hazards or safety issues immediately. To teach the entire company, we share safety incidents company-wide to prevent the same issues from occurring twice on any of our job sites.

Safety isn’t a one-time discussion. Technology, equipment, and methods are ever-changing. At Sargent, we do everything possible to train and continuously improve our safety methods.

Take 5

Take 5 is a tool that Sargent provides its crews to assist in their planning and decision making with the goal of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. Taking 5 applies to all aspects of the construction industry, on the job and at home. It allows Sargent’s employee-owners to see the bigger picture and plan for the “what if.”

Safety Director: Cameron Haggar

Cameron is our safety director. Before joining the Sargent family, he worked in various safety roles for companies throughout the Midwest and New England. Cameron enjoys building relationships with employees at every level of our company, and he says that developing trust with each team member is one of the keys to promoting a safe environment. When he’s not working, you can find Cameron enjoying the outdoors.

Safety Specialist: Arthur Herbest

Arthur has more than 20 years in the safety field. He started his safety career with Champion International at the Costigan mill. This is his third tour with Sargent. Arthur retired with 23 years of military service from the United States Marine Corps and Maine Army National Guard. He has been married to his wife Julie since 1988.

Safety Specialist: James Joyner

Before joining the Sargent Safety Team, James was an Environmental Specialist with a Biotechnology company for 16 years. He takes special care to work within the Sargent team of employee-owners, on all levels, to ensure they are executing the tasks at hand in the safest manner possible.

Safety Specialist: Adam Pollock

Adam has a degree in Environmental Science from the Community College of the Air Force. He spent seven years being part of a civil engineering squadron in the Air Force where he served as safety NCO. His squadron worked on roads and runways, installed underground utilities, built and maintained base infrastructure, and completed large construction projects overseas where they would build entire forward operating bases from the ground up. At Sargent, he believes it’s important to conduct inspections to help identify any hazards and help find ways to mitigate them, while providing training to give up-to-date information on safety practices and procedures.
