Sargent is currently involved in two projects at the state-owned Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town. They are constructing Cell 15 on the north side and working on the Stage 1 closure on the south side, which involves permanently closing Cell 10 along with parts of Cells 6 and 8. The landfill is operated by New England Waste Services of Maine LLC, a subsidiary of Casella Waste Systems.
Jim Braley, Bangor regional manager for Sargent, explained the closure process, which includes grading existing waste to match the final design grade, adding a soft material layer for a barrier, placing a screened till layer, and installing a liner system with various components to manage stormwater. Sargent crews are also creating surface terraces to control stormwater and prevent erosion.
