Sargent is reconstructing nearly five miles of U.S. Route 1 between Milbridge and Cherryfield in a $16.8 million, federally supported project aimed at improving roadway safety. Work began in April 2025 and was strategically divided into sections to meet environmental in-stream work windows, allowing significant progress to be completed within a single year. Strong local knowledge and community connections—particularly from the project superintendent—helped streamline material sourcing and logistics, while favorable weather conditions further accelerated progress. The project is expected to wrap up with final paving and touch-ups by mid-2026, ahead of its original timeline.
