Q: What is your job title with Sargent, and what are your core responsibilities?
A: I’m the Controller. I ensure our financial information is accurate, clear, and useful for guiding the company’s decisions. I help with the preparation of financial reports, support budgeting and forecasting, and keep our accounting processes running smoothly. I also work closely with other departments to make sure job costs, equipment, and resources are tracked properly. My role is all about keeping things organized, transparent, and forward-looking so the company can stay strong and continue to grow.
Q: What are the main challenges of your job?
A: One of the most challenging aspects of being a Controller in the construction industry is that no two days are ever the same. The work is fast-paced, with tight deadlines and frequent time crunches, all while balancing the many moving pieces that come with construction accounting. From job costing and equipment management to inventory, cash flow, and project reporting, there are countless details that require attention. Because so many departments contribute to the financial picture, there are many moving parts and a lot of hands involved, making communication and collaboration essential.
Q: What were you doing in your career before joining Sargent?
A: My first job after college was with a local hotel company, where I worked as a Staff Accountant. After nearly five years there, I joined Sargent, where I’ve now been for almost ten years.
Q: What do you enjoy about your job?
A: What I enjoy most about my job is being a small part of a much larger team. Everyone brings unique skills, perspectives, and experiences, and when we work together toward a common goal, we can accomplish great things.
Q: Why do you think Sargent is such a great company to work for?
A: What makes Sargent a great place to work is the people. The supportive culture, strong teamwork, and commitment to employee development create an environment where everyone feels valued. It’s rewarding to work for an organization that invests in its employees while striving to make a positive impact in the community.
Q: How do you think this industry could do a better job of recruiting young talent?
A: I personally believe this industry could learn a thing or two from how we recruit and develop young talent here at Sargent. We do an outstanding job of investing in the next generation through initiatives like attending career fairs, the Sargent Leadership Academy, and the incredible work of our Workforce Advancement team. These programs not only help us attract talented individuals but also provide them with the support and opportunities they need to grow into successful professionals.
Q: Has there been anyone throughout your life that you’ve viewed as a mentor?
A: I have too many mentors to name individually. From family and friends to former coaches and teachers, and even many of my current coworkers, so many people have helped shape who I am today. Their guidance, encouragement, and support have influenced me both personally and professionally, and I am grateful for the role each of them has played in my journey.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Sean, and our three children—Bennett, Willow, and Griffin. I’m a fair-weather runner and like to play soccer whenever I get the chance. In the summer, we make it a priority to spend as much time as possible outdoors or at camp, exploring and appreciating all the beauty our state has to offer.
