Q: What is your job title with Sargent, and what are your core responsibilities?
A: I’m the New England Lead Estimator. My job is putting together the numbers behind our bids across the region. I dig into the plans and specs, run the quantities, and price out the labor, equipment, and materials it takes to build the work.
A lot of it is coordination. I pull quotes from subs and suppliers, weigh what comes in, and lean on our project managers and field crews to keep the estimates grounded in how we actually get the job done. Come bid day, I help pull it all together and hand off a clear picture of what we priced once we win the work.
Q: What are the main challenges of your job?
A: Balancing when/where we need work for the New England Regional and ensuring it’s the best work for our crews.
Q: What were you doing in your career before joining Sargent?
A: I worked as a Geotechnical Engineer Consultant for a few years out of college before transitioning to the construction side.
Q: What do you enjoy about your job?
A: I get to bid or review every project in the New England Region. I enjoy having some in-depth knowledge of all the jobs and catching up with the field crews to see how things are going on site.
Q: Why do you think Sargent is such a great company to work for?
A: They treat their employees very well and provide plenty of room to grow for self-motivated individuals.
Q: Are there any accomplishments in your career that you’re particularly proud of?
A: The completion of a number of tricky MTA projects up and down I-95 in Maine.
Q: How do you think this industry could do a better job of recruiting young talent?
A: I think the industry is doing a fairly good job. You can see a significant difference over the past decade or so. The trades have started to become appealing again.
Q: Has there been anyone throughout your life that you’ve viewed as a mentor?
A: I had the opportunity to spend a number of years working under Scott Blanchard, learning how to run projects in the field, and the past few years under Pat Dubay, learning how to estimate work.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I enjoy spending time with my family as well as time outdoors.
