The Milltown Dam in Calais, Maine, is undergoing removal with work anticipated to start in July. Sargent Construction, subcontracting for Pennecon Heavy Civil Limited, is leading the effort to dismantle the American side of the historic hydroelectric dam, which was built in 1881 and decommissioned in 2023. This project, approved by both U.S. and Canadian regulators, is notable as the first dam removal in international waters. The goal is to restore 16 kilometers of the St. Croix River and enhance spawning habitats for sea-run fish species. Despite setbacks due to a failed cofferdam last fall, work is expected to resume with Sargent using a new earthen cofferdam and implementing fish-friendly features. The project is projected to be completed by October 2024.
