The causeway connecting Bickford Island to the mainland in Kennebunkport has undergone significant improvements to enhance its resilience against flooding. A recent project led by Sargent raised the causeway by 4.5 feet and installed new retaining walls on both sides to address issues caused by astronomical high tides. The 450-foot section of Pier Road was reconstructed in stages to ensure continuous access to the island, which includes restaurants, private homes, a marina, and a pier for lobstermen.
The project featured the installation of DOUBLEWAL retaining walls—a precast, interlocking concrete system—along with heavy riprap for additional stability. Engineers and the town recognized the need for these upgrades to accommodate future sea-level rise due to the warming Gulf of Maine. Funded by a $2.6 million award from the 2022 Maine Infrastructure Adaptation Fund, the project, which began in March 2024, is expected to finish ahead of schedule by the end of May 2024. The improvements included ongoing access to the island and the replacement of a sewer force main. The project has been well-received by both engineers and the local community.
