Sargent was awarded a $6.6 million contract for its first project at the Roaring River Landfill in Wilkes County, North Carolina, which entails the construction of a new 11.1-acre “virgin cell” to begin Phase 6 of the 600-acre county-owned facility, and marks their first opportunity to work with the engineering firm LaBella Associates. The eight-month contract involves substantial earthwork, including 106,000 cubic yards of excavation, creation of three sediment basins, and installation of a 53,000-square-yard cushioned geotextile membrane and storm drainage piping, along with building a perimeter access road. This new cell is urgently needed, as the landfill, which handles 90,000 tons of trash annually, plans to begin disposal immediately upon Sargent’s completion due to being nearly out of existing air space.
