Work is progressing at the Fitchburg Westminster Sanitary Landfill in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where Sargent crews are enhancing stormwater and leachate management systems. The project, which began in November 2022 and is set to finish by summer 2025, includes over 50,000 cubic yards of waste excavation and the construction of an 800-foot-long mechanically stabilized earthen (MSE) berm.
Owned by Resource Control, Inc., a Waste Management subsidiary, the landfill spans 223.8 acres and processes 265,541 tons of municipal solid waste annually. The ongoing work features significant infrastructure upgrades, including stormwater basin installations, leachate system enhancements, and the creation of a new 11-acre cell. Challenges have arisen due to the site’s remote location and aggregate production difficulties. The project is being engineered by Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc., with Sargent employee-owners managing the complex tasks involved.
