Project Overview

Sargent employee-owners are engaged in multiple large-scale projects at the University of Maine in Orono, including sitework and excavation for the 50,000-square-foot Green Engineering and Materials (GEM) building, which is part of an $82 million investment scheduled for 2026 completion and will house the cutting-edge Factory of the Future. Other work involves a phase of the new sports complex, including the New Balance Track & Field and Soccer Complex targeting an October opening, as well as infrastructure improvements and renovations at the Harold Alfond Sports Arena and the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center, all requiring careful scheduling to manage noise and avoid interfering with campus activities. Sargent’s work for the GEM building also included utility installation and pouring a massive 2-foot-thick concrete slab, with the team effectively managing multiple concurrent projects across the campus.
