Sargent, a construction company with a diverse portfolio, recently completed a challenging project at the University of Maine campus. Working in a confined space near historic buildings, Sargent employee-owners undertook tasks ranging from underground infrastructure work to site grading, parking lot construction, and structural foundation work. Despite harsh weather conditions, the team successfully transformed the 180 feet by 125 feet space into a boutique hotel with 95 rooms and suites, set to open in spring 2024. The $28 million project, part of a broader initiative involving historic structures on the University Mall, adheres to National Park Service standards for rehabilitation and aims to enhance UMaine’s campus with a high-quality hospitality offering. Various collaborators, including Archetype Architects, Wright-Ryan Construction, and Sewall Engineering, contributed to the project’s success. Sargent plans to return in the spring for finishing touches, emphasizing the collaborative efforts required when working on a small site with multiple trades coordinating their work.
